LtCol Matthew Curry was born and raised in Michigan and enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 1999. Upon graduation from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and assigned the MOS of 6072, Aviation Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Mechanic, PFC Curry checked into Marine Attack Squadron 311 aboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma.
While at VMA-311, Corporal Curry deployed with the 31st MEU as a GSE mechanic in 2001 and with the 15th MEU as a GSE Mechanic, Plane Captain and Powerplants Collateral Duty Inspector in support of OIF in 2003. He transitioned out of the Marine Corps in July 2004 remaining in Yuma, AZ to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix Yuma campus. In December 2008, he was selected to OCC-200 beginning in January 2009.
Second Lieutenant Curry was commissioned in March 2009 and assigned to Marine Air Control Squadron 1 aboard MCAS Yuma, AZ. While at MACS-1 he served as the Motor Transport Platoon Commander, Tactical Air Operations Center (TAOC) Detachment Executive Officer and the acting TAOC Detachment Commander. He deployed to Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan as a Senior Traffic Director in 2012 in support of OEF. Upon his return to CONUS, he earned his Senior Air Director qualification before departing for Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in June 2013.
While attending NPS, Captain Curry completed the Expeditionary Warfare School non-resident program, the Naval War College Joint Professional Military Education Phase 1 non-resident program and earned a Master’s of Science degree in Management. After graduation from NPS in March 2015, Captain Curry was assigned to Total Force Structure Division (TFSD), Combat Development and Integration.
While at TFSD, Captain Curry served as a Manpower Analyst, Authorized Strength Report (ASR) Manager and DOTMLPF/C Working Group Secretariat providing manpower structure data and analysis for the Marine Corps Force 2025 and Reserve Force 2025 Force Structure reviews, published the semiannual ASR and facilitated DOTMLPF/C analysis for numerous other organizational changes.
In June 2018, Major Curry reported to Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 18 aboard MCAS Futenma, Okinawa. While assigned there, he graduated from Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course and served as Senior Air Coordinator, Squadron Operations Officer and Squadron Executive Officer.
In June 2021, Maj Curry reported to HQ USAFRICOM and was assigned to the Strategy, Engagement and Plans (J5) directorate as a Strategic Engagement Planner and Directorate Executive Officer. While there, he planned and managed USAFRICOM GO/FO engagements with partner nations, incorporated the Strategic Engagement Working Group into the Command B2C2WG battle rhythm and then served as the XO for the three J5 General Officers.
In August 2024, LtCol Curry reported to OPNAV N7 as a Strategist within the N72 where he served as the Navy Force Design lead. He and his wife Candice have been married for 22 years and have three sons: Keegan (20), Connor (17) and Liam (14).
